I’m Annie Mok (below, on the right, in my band the Knight Dreams). I’m a writer-artist based in Philadelphia.
What follows is a retrospective of my book cover and album design work from 2014—2020. I’m available for work at heyanniemok (at) gmail. All work is (c) me except where noted.
This was the first EP by my first band, See-Through Girls. I wanted to capture the fun and chaotic energy of our live shows in the drawing. The title in Tagalog, essentially means “looks pink,” and it was suggested by our guitarist Al (it’s also the name of a famous song).
In 2015 we released a split tape with Moor Mother (then under the name Moor Mother Goddess), who contributed some rad soundscapes. I designed the tape inserts with art from guitar player Al San Val.
Here is the tape insert as it appeared pre-folding.
And here’s the inside, which came from a photo of Al’s desk.
In 2015 we played the Smiths in a Galentine’s Day cover band show at PhilaMoCA to benefit the Attic LGBTQ youth center here in Philly, and I drew the flier.
Sometime later I broke up the band, due to no fault of the lovely other members. We played a show with Moor Mother debuting the tape, and recorded it. I thought this image by Al fit the feeling.
In 2019 we released a 21-track album of improvised basement pop. We decided upon a design using the first press photo that was ever taken of us.
I wanted this one to be the cover of Hot Takes, but I got shot down.
Speaking of music, here’ss a design for a tee-shirt for the band Petal’s summer tour in 2016. I tried to make an image that emulated Kiley’s raw yet tender approach to music.
Now, onto books!
In 2015 I revised an old zine I’d done with writer Casey Plett, author of Little Fish and A Safe Girl to Love. Casey had sent me on a pleasurable research trip in Manhattan, where I ate at Hotel Tortuga (seen above), stopped at a diner, shopped by the Strand…
I designed this 2016 cover based off collages by Philadelphia poet Camae Ayewa, AKA Moor Mother. I wanted to letter in a way that might reflect Camae’s nuanced yet unfiltered-seeming way of performing and composing music and poetry.
Here’s the original back cover, before some slight changes were made, including adding the ISBN bar code.
Art by Kiara Monae, design by me for this 2016 book cover for science fiction writer and Metropolarity member Rasheedah Phillips. To me, a central theme of Rasheedah’s work seemed to be flipping perceptions, so I took that literally with the typography.
There were a lot of nixed cover versions, so here are some below.
In 2017 I illustrated and designed this cover for a trans woman writers’ fantasy anthology.
Two killed covers are below.
I like how 70’s this below one looks…
In 2017 I began a series cover redesign for Sophie Campbell’s classic Wet Moon graphic novels. I drew from Sophie’s interior illustrations and my own lettering and design work to make these new versions.
The pink was the way to go, but I still like this more goth-y, horror take, below.
Below, the back cover for volume 4.
Below is one of the comps for volume 5, I’m actually blanking on whether it’s the print version, or just the one I liked best.
Not a design, but here are some illustrations for an article called The Catastrophist, Or: On Coming Out as Trans at 37 by Emily Todd VanDerWerff.
Finally, here are a few covers for my books. Below is the cover for the initial run of Annie Mok Loves Videogames (still available as a PDF).
Here’s the cover for the 2019 second PDF edition, featuring a 2016 tribute to Link’s Awakening.
Below is my PDF collection Pink Juice, first edition.
And lastly, the 2nd edition PDF cover of my book collection.
I repurposed this cover from my 2017 pitch comic, “The Movies of My Heart.” I leave you with this. Thanks for looking and reading and listening! <3
